Trumpet player and tunesmith Hayden Powell is originally English, but grew up in the Norwegian jazz festival town of Molde. His trio presents original and playful chamber jazz, full of detail and dynamics. Their most recent album, Circadian Rhythm & Blues was released in 2015.
This new work is Powell’s most ambitions to date, a double album of both trio and solo material that picks off where Roots and Stems ended – and continues in a distinctly new direction. Recorded in a Copenhagen studio and a church in Oslo, this album marked a new chapter in Powell’s career.
Hayden Powell Trio has gained plenty of live experience and excels in intimate venues where they can connect closely to the audience. Since releasing their first album The Attic in 2011, they played more than 60 concerts all over Norway, including Moldejazz, Nattjazz, and Nasjonal Jazzscene Victoria. They’ve also made several appearances abroad and look to expand on this in coming years.
A trumpeter on the ascendance … there’s the sense that this is an album that couldn’t have been made anywhere but Norway … an album with undeniably broad appeal (John Kelman, All About Jazz, on Roots and Stems)
