Hi everyone, I’ve had a long and eventful summer and a bit of a hiatus from updating the website. So, here’s an update on what I’ve been up to.

Hayden Powell Trios gig in Porto in May was our first in Portugal, and what a place to start. The venue Casa da Musica is quite a piece of architecture in itself and we had a lovely time playing for an appreciative audience. We had Helge Lien substituting for Eyolf on this one, which gave the music a different approach (naturally) and was a lot of fun. You’ll find reviews of the concert and our album in the list to you left.

May was a busy month. Besides Porto I attended Maijazz in Stavanger where I played with Dag Magnus Narvesen’s octet DaMaNa (look out for more gigs later this year) and with the Bjergsted Jazzensemble. Bjergsted is a big band that consisting mainly of students and ex-students from the conservatory in Stavanger. They write all their own music, and have some really talented musicians and composers among them. I also performed at Lillehammer Litteraturfestival with Solfrid Molland and the brilliant French guitarist Pascal de Loutchek, and at the 50-year anniversary of my old school wind band, Kvam og Sellanrå Skolekorps. That was a lot of fun, meeting many people I hadn’t seen in years.

In June I spent several weeks in Sunndalsøra taking part in Lady Arbuthnota musical play that’s been running each summer the last 19 years (!). I was impressed both by the music and what was happening on stage, still haven’t got all those melodies out of my head. They sold out 10 performances in front of an audience of 400 people – not bad for a small town!

Then there was Pixel at Vinjerock. This highly original “indiejazz” quartet has become very popular in Norway and I was lucky enough to stand in for their regular trumpeter Jonas at Vinjerock, held high up in the Norwegian mountains. There was a lot of new material to learn but they have some really catchy songs and I really enjoyed playing the gig. “Jazz gigs” at rock festivals can be hard to get right but in this case I think the band was a good match for the audience, who were very enthusiastic!

August started with a week at Toneheim Folkehøyskole, where a took part in a summer camp for young musicians (“Svart kurs“) that’s always inspiring to be a part of. A really positive vibe throughout the week and lots of positive, interested and very talented young musicians. After that came the summer’s main event (drum roll).. I got married! My wonderful wife Kristin and I had a fantastic time in beautiful surroundings in Jølster in the west coast of Norway. We were surrounded by friends and family, and had a weekend full of good food, drink and of course music.

So, on to the autumn!
